NEO-RLS News-June 29, 2022
Using the NEO-RLS Salary Survey

"NEO-RLS's salary survey enabled our Admin Team to make informed pay scale recommendations to our Board. Over 12 years had passed since the Library last reviewed a salary survey and made corresponding adjustments to our pay scale. The salary survey results illustrated to our board the need to participate in a salary survey on a regular basis.

The ability to filter information to find the metrics that applied to our system was crucial. The survey allowed the team to give the board concrete pay information based on other library systems with similar revenue and number of employees. Reports could further be filtered based on job description, required education level and/or FSLA status. The ability to pick and choose parameters was essential to narrowing down the information that pertained to our situation."
- Lisa Havlin, Fiscal Officer, Geauga County Public Library

A Note From the Executive Director
[http://neo-rls.org/photos/92382_06292022072448.jpg]I've spent a lot of my time at NEO-RLS learning about leadership. What are the traits of a good leader? How to best develop leaders? Why are some people better at leading than others? I recently read an article entitled, "Finding Your Leadership Pathway: part 1" by Doug Crane, Director, Palm Beach County Library System ( ALA Learning Exchange, June 2022) in which he talks about leadership development as a journey with multiple steps and reiterates the fact that being a leader doesn't have to mean being a supervisor or administrator. He stresses the importance of knowing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values so you can embark on the aspect of leadership that best suits you. Mr. Crane uses the Nexus Lab: Layers of Leadership Model <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=62399887&nr=6257878787> with its six different types of leadership (Leading Self, Leading Others, Leading the Department, Leading Multiple Departments, Leading the Organization, Leading the Profession) as a guide. We need leaders in all aspects and at all levels of our libraries and we need to work together to develop our leaders. NEO-RLS' nine-month Leadership Academy <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=62384001&nr=6257878787> helps enhance existing leadership skills and build new skills. The Academy begins in the fall and is open to anyone beginning or already on a leadership journey. We invite you to join us. Together we are maximizing library potential. Have a great rest of your week and a safe, relaxing and fun July 4th!

The recently introduced Keep Kids Fed Act <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=62402331&nr=6257878787> is being fast-tracked through Congress and passed yesterday in the House of Representatives. If it becomes law, the Keep Kids Fed Act will allow summer meal providers the flexibility to provide grab and go meals, meal delivery, and distribution of up to a week's worth of meals at a time in summer 2022. It will also make changes to the school meal program for the 2022-23 school year to make it easier for more kids to get free school meals.
Registration is open for a very interesting national conference taking place in Cincinnati on July 27-30. Attendees include educators, program administrators, higher education faculty, researchers, education consultants, landscape designers, and others who are committed to or interested in bringing nature, outdoor learning, and environmental education to young children's education.
