A Note From the
Executive Director

Succession planning can be daunting but it is essential in planning for the future. The NEO-RLS staff have heard from library staff and administrators that they are facing turnover and retirements in the coming years, with no succession plan in place. That is why we have decided to focus on succession planning for the 2023 Director’s Retreat: Start Planning for your Library’s Future Now<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=191863455&mm=72515711051>.

The first day of the retreat, Thursday, May 25th, will feature, Up Next: Ensuring a Leadership Pipeline through Succession Planning and Learning Organization Practices, presented by Amanda Standerfer. This session will break down succession planning into do-able chunks that will help you get ahead of potential staffing changes in leadership positions at your library. Beyond starting a succession plan for your library, we will talk about learning organization practices to increase staff engagement and ensure talent pipeline development.

We will conclude the retreat on Friday, May 26th with, Mentoring for Individual and Organizational Success, presented by Paula Miller. Paula will discuss 3 distinct types of mentoring, the role of self-care and humility in mentoring, and explore examples of organizational mentoring. Participants will leave with a brief mentoring action plan for their library.

In addition to these workshops, we will have rich conversations and time to network with your peers. We will be returning to Punderson Manor Lodge & Conference Center this year and we hope you will join us!

Ohio Deaf History Month celebrates deaf history and the contributions of the hearing impaired and Deaf community to society. The General Assembly of the State of Ohio passed legislation in 2017 designating the period beginning March 13 and ending April 15 as Ohio Deaf History Month. The State Library of Ohio Board proclaimed the period beginning March 13 and ending April 15, 2023 as Ohio Deaf History Month and encourages Ohio libraries to display materials and host deaf awareness activities to highlight the significance of the many outstanding contributions made by Deaf and hearing pioneers, particularly in Deaf Education.

Does your library serve summer meals/snacks, or are you interested in being a meal site or supporting other meal sites in your area? Many libraries in Ohio and around the USA participate in the Summer Food Service Program<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=191897671&mm=72515711051> (SFSP), a USDA-funded program that provides free meals and snacks to children ages 0-18 in communities with high levels of need.

The need for this program remains great. In the wake of the pandemic, economic instability and food insecurity continue to hurt Ohioans. Additionally, SNAP emergency allotments<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=191898893&mm=72515711051> ended today<https://www.ideastream.org/show/sound-of-ideas/2023-01-25/end-of-emergency-allotments-coming-for-ohio-snap-recipients> (March 1), impacting over 670,000 Ohio households<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=191900115&mm=72515711051> with an average cut of approximately 30% of food purchasing power per person.

The Ohio Digitization Interest Group welcomes presentation proposals for our next virtual meeting, held Tuesday, March 21, 2023. The theme of the March meeting will be managing community-generated digital content.

Managing digital materials created within specific community contexts is an area of increasing interest and research within the cultural heritage sector and presents both myriad challenges and exciting opportunities. We welcome presentation proposals from colleagues from all types of Ohio cultural heritage organizations who are interested in sharing their experiences in this burgeoning area of digital cultural heritage work! These will be short, 10/15-minute presentations that can touch on a wide range of topics relating to managing and curating community-generated digital content, including but not limited to:

The Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN) is seeking nominations for its Board of Trustees. The OPLIN Board consists of eleven members appointed by the State Library Board (ORC 3375.65). These members are library directors, staff, and past or present trustees of public libraries.

The OPLIN Board has two vacancies for three-year terms with the option to be reappointed for an additional three-year term.

We urge members of the public library community to reflect on the qualifications of their library trustees and colleagues and nominate candidates for the OPLIN Board. Any individual who believes he or she has a contribution to make should feel free to self-nominate. We actively seek out Board membership that represents both library trustees and staff, all parts of Ohio, and all sizes of public libraries. In order to reflect the diverse interests of Ohio's 251 independent libraries, and to serve the best interests of Ohio's many library patrons and information consumers, it is vital that we have a strong pool of nominees from which to select Board members.
