The Dayton Metro Library is seeking a full-time Special Collections Director at the Main Library in downtown Dayton. The ideal candidate will seek opportunities to strategically acquire items for the collection that are historically significant to Dayton and Montgomery County. They will also be skilled at marketing the collection to the community and local organizations. They will provide direct customer service to patrons in our Dayton Room and oversee the daily operations of the department and staff. Join our team today!

Essential Job Duties
* Establishes and implements goals and objectives for Special Collections at the Main Library that support the Library's mission, and works to provide vision for the strategic development of special and archival collections.
* Directs all department services such as reference assistance, genealogy, government documents, local history, and programming. Ensures that customer service is a top priority for all Special Collections staff members.
* Directly hires, trains, supervises, schedules, coaches, and evaluates employees in Special Collections. Oversees department volunteers. Ensures proper staffing at assigned customer service points. Serves as liaison between Public Services Director and staff. Communicates with the administrative team on policy, patron, and staffing issues.
* Represents the Library in initiatives and events related to special collections and archives within and outside of Dayton Metro Library. Contribute to the Library's role in the field through active marketing, partnerships, and strategic acquisitions of materials that prioritize the full history of the people and places of Dayton and Montgomery County.
* Ensures the efficient, effective, customer service-oriented delivery of services to Library patrons. Maintains a current knowledge of Library operations, policies, and procedures. Demonstrates and models excellent internal and external customer service. A minimum of 10-20% of work time is spent at a public service point.
* Manages the collections in Special Collections (periodicals, government documents, genealogy, local history, archives, manuscripts, and electronic resources) and oversees evaluation and processing of donated materials. Collaborates with Technical Services to ensure the collection is responsive to community's information, recreational, and educational needs. Arranges for the selection, deselection, preservation, and digitization of special collection materials. Arranges for repair, cancellation, or redistribution of materials as needed.
* Promotes community awareness of the Library and establishes effective communication and partnerships with community groups, organizations, and individuals.
* Prepares annual budget requests and submits quarterly, topical, and other reports as requested.
* Answers patrons' reference questions and assists patrons in selecting and locating materials. Assists patrons in the use of computers, personal electronic devices, and library virtual materials.
Job Qualifications
* PhD or Master's degree in a related field (Public History, Archival Studies, etc.) or a Master's in Library and Information Science from an A.L.A. accredited program is preferred
* A minimum of three to five years of increasingly responsible experience working with special collections or archives or experience in a public library setting at a professional level. Supervisory experience preferred.
* Demonstrated experience developing and marketing programs that showcase the role of special collections and archives in research, curricular use, and special collections.
* Ability to maintain effective relationships with community officials, leaders, organizations, the public, Library managers, and staff.
* Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, policy and procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.
* Ability to write reports and business correspondence clearly and informatively. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, patrons, and members of the community individually and in a group setting.
* Ability to deal effectively with confrontational individuals and/or challenging situations.
* Ability to plan, schedule and oversee department operations and personnel. Knowledge of professional library principles, theories, concepts, policies, and procedures.
* Ability to develop programs and services to meet community needs.
Schedule: Monday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM; Tuesday, Wednesday and alternating Friday/Saturdays: 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM; Thursday: 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM *Subject to change*
Transportation: Valid Ohio driver's license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and continuous insurability required for driving own vehicle for Library-related obligations OR has access to reliable and efficient* transportation. (*Definition of efficient is that employee can travel to and from required work obligations within Google Maps' specified timeframe.)
Compensation and Benefits: The starting annual salary for this position is $74,853. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement.
