My thoughts.

If your photos have grey from the bottom, up you probably are out of luck.
That usually indicates the file has been chopped in size.
Compare the size, using right click and properties, with other pictures taken at 
the same time.
If significantly smaller, the file is bad.

At this point look for a backup or get the thumbnail is the last resort..
Thumbnails are stored separately in the file.
http://www.impulseadventure.com/photo/jpeg-snoop-uses.html explains this and a 
method to get
Downside is thumbnails are very low resolution.

This link has some recovery software.
I haven't tried them but a friend did. No luck for him as he had the grey problem
