[OPLINTECH] Flash and Chrome

Yes, the walkback of support for Flash in Chrome is now noticeable to users. Firefox plans to end support for NPAPI plugins in March – all except Flash. I provide and support IE, Chrome, and Firefox on Win7 public computers. I try to provide as much backward compatibility as possible, so patrons can access the content they want. Since Chrome is well along in their calendar to end support for the Flash plugin, I currently have Flash disabled in Chrome, and I encourage patrons who are trying to access Flash content to use Firefox. There are always patrons who need a corporate or edu site that insists on using Silverlight, and so must have access to IE, etc.

Like John, I manage Chrome’s behavior with Group Policy, using admx templates from the Chromium project. Full documentation is available at chromium.org. If you don’t deploy an AD domain, it’s also possible to manage Chrome per computer, in the registry. I use a GPO to force install extensions in Chrome, configure homepage, disable password manager, delete history on exit, and several other things helpful in a kiosk environment. Chromium project offers a very full-featured template, and clear documentation to track down the features you want configured – if that will work in your environment, I definitely recommend their admx as a time-saver.

Subject: [OPLINTECH] Flash and Chrome

Has anyone seen the issue with Flash not updating in Google Chrome? Our patrons have been complaining that websites won't open in Chrome because it says Flash player is not up to date. Even if I install the latest version of Chrome it still says Flash is not up to date. Has anyone been able to resolve this issue? None of the resolutions from Google searches has fixed the issue.

I am almost ready to uninstall Chrome from the public computers because of this issue. I have it installed as an alternative to Internet Explorer. Would I be better off using Firefox?
