Hello folks,

Karen Yablonsky, the director of Sylvester Memorial Wellston Public
Library, was kind enough to give me a heads-up about a sales call that she
received yesterday and also gave me permission to share it with the Webkits
announcement listserv (see below).

AI accessibility scans are much like other automated tools: they cannot
reliably judge, for example, whether an image description is meaningful, or
if someone can actually complete a task using a keyboard or screen reader.

*"Tools cannot check all accessibility aspects automatically. Human
judgement is required. Sometimes evaluation tools can produce false or
misleading results. Web accessibility evaluation tools can not determine
accessibility, they can only assist in doing so." W3C explains why
automated results require human evaluation.

This overlaps with the accessibility community’s concerns about *overlays*,
but the two are not identical. Overlays try to change the visitor’s
experience after the page loads and can interfere with assistive
technology; the Overlay Fact Sheet <https://overlayfactsheet.com/>
documents those concerns.

For those of you who have attended OPLIN's accessibility webinars or office
hours, this information is probably not new. But this call Karen received
serves as a good reminder that companies like this look for organizations
that may not know.

OPLIN is always working to make Webkits as accessible as possible. If you
have specific concerns, please feel free to reach out to me or attend the
next upcoming Accessibility Office Hour

Hello Laura,
I just wanted you to know that yesterday, I got a call from Yuja who wanted
to make sure I knew that websites had to be accessible.
I asked if this was a sales call and he was kind of hedgy about that. To
get him off the phone, I told him we were covered, but if he wanted to
email me some info, that would be great.
He never really indicated whether he was selling something or not. The
whole call was kind of sketchy. He's probably just making the rounds in
Ohio.

Just FYI.

Karen
