Social Workers in Libraries: A Conversation with Beth Wahler & Sarah Johnson

Topics Covered:
Ryan will be interviewing Beth Wahler and Sarah Johnson, authors of the upcoming book Creating a Person-Centered Library: Best Practices for Supporting High-Needs Patrons.
During the interview, they will discuss:

  *   How libraries can partner for social services.
  *   Should your library have a social worker?
  *   How libraries can best use social work interns.

About the Authors:
Elizabeth A. Wahler is a professor and director of the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina and founder of Beth Wahler Consulting. She has collaborated with libraries and library systems across the United States to conduct assessments of their patrons' psychosocial needs and staff challenges with these types of patron needs; provided training to library staff about trauma-informed librarianship and other approaches to addressing their patrons' needs; and created and piloted various interventions to address patron needs and support library staff. She is recognized internationally for her work on library and social work collaborations.
Sarah C. Johnson is an adjunct lecturer at the School of Information Studies at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, USA. where she teaches a course on library social work and is helping to develop a dual LIS/MSW degree. She is also the adjunct reference and instruction librarian at Cincinnati State. She is a licensed social worker, and her research focuses on the impact of social work students conducting their field placements at public libraries.

Ryan Dowd’s Homelessness Training and Niche Academy will be doing a cleanup to keep trainings updated and easy to find.  On July 31, we will remove the following trainings from Niche Academy:

  *   Backup: How to backup a coworker during crisis (being replaced by new training)
  *   Q&A with Ryan - Parts 1, 2, & 3
  *   COVID: How to deal with problem behaviors related to COVID-19
  *   Resolving Liberal Vs. Conservative Conflict in the Workplace
  *   Homeless Children and Libraries: Special presentation with Lydia Sigwarth

If you have started any of these trainings, please finish and download their certificates before July 31.
A former director of a Chicago homeless shelter, Ryan Dowd is the author of The Librarians Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone.  He travels all over the United States speaking to libraries about how to best help homeless patrons using empathy and respect.  He also provides training to police departments, nonprofits and other organizations on how to compassionately manage problematic behavior from troubled individuals.

The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 and has been renewed through August 2023. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is available for all Ohio public and academic library staff.  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.  Archived webinars are available as separate modules in Niche Academy.
