Topics Covered: Understanding Addiction: A conversation with Dr. Nicholaus Christian

Dr. Christian is an internal medicine and addiction medicine clinician and researcher for the Office of Clinical Director for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Intramural Research Program.

During his internal medicine residency training at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Christian helped start the “B-Team,” a national model for expanding access to buprenorphine for hospitalized patients with opioid use disorder. Throughout residency Dr. Christian lived as a “missional” resident at

Community First! Village, a master-planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for people transitioning out of chronic homelessness.

Dr. Christian’s current clinical and research interests include improving care for people who use substances that are on the continuum of experiencing homelessness to being stably housed.

Core Training
The new Homeless De-Escalation Core Training is set up on Niche Academy.
The following trainings are included in the Core Training:

  *   Homeless De-Escalation 101: Trauma & the five most important seconds of conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 201: Nonverbal tools to eliminate conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 301: Preventing conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 401: Managing your own emotions during conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 501: Verbal tools for conflict

VIDEO CLIPS FOR STAFF MEETINGS
Short videos meant for staff meetings and sharing small bites of information are now available on Niche Academy. They are less than 7 minutes long and cover a wide range of topics.

A former director of a Chicago homeless shelter, Ryan Dowd is the author of The Librarians Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone.  He travels all over the United States speaking to libraries about how to best help homeless patrons using empathy and respect.  He also provides training to police departments, nonprofits and other organizations on how to compassionately manage problematic behavior from troubled individuals.

The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness<https://library.ohio.gov/libraries/training-and-development/librarians-guide-to-homelessness> core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 and has been renewed through August 2024. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is available for all Ohio public and academic library staff.  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.  Archived webinars are available as separate modules in Niche Academy.
