This year we would like to organize a statewide “Archives Crawl” for
Archives month in October. The ultimate goal is to promote and raise
awareness about Ohio archives in general by creating an Ohio archives
“passport” broken down by metropolitan regions that would be available year
round.

At the SOA spring meeting last year the idea of a crawl was proposed and
members of the Miami Valley Archives Roundtable (MVAR) in southwest Ohio
organized a regional crawl in October with sixteen archival repositories
participating. The passport included name, logo, and hours for the
participating archives. The passport had a section listing local
archives/museum/history events that were going on during the month of
October. Archival “crawlers” made their own arrangements to visit the
repositories throughout the month of October and at the end of the month, a
drawing was held from the visitors who had collected enough stamps. Local
organizations and Gaylord sponsored prizes for the winners. The MVAR
passport is attached. These were printed individually at each repository to
distribute to visitors.

We’d love to see this expand statewide and by having a few people from each
the metropolitan areas of Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron,
and Toledo step forward to help coordinate repositories within their region
to be included in the passport.

California
<http://www.sos.ca.gov/archives/public-events/archives-month/archives-crawl/>
 and Oregon <http://www.portlandoregon.gov/archives/article/499788?> both
hold annual Archives Crawls in October, focusing their efforts on a single
day rather than continuing the crawl throughout the month. You can check
out the linked sites for more information about what they do.

We want to come up with a game plan to compile the passport and make it
available, coordinate local activities, and not only advertise the crawl
for the month of October, but to make people aware of the passport and the
other repositories available to them across the state.

If you are interested in helping to organize within your region to contact
local repositories about participating in the October crawl and being
included in the statewide passport, please contact Natalie Fritz at

Thank you!
