      Description

The first part of the seminar will cover the stages in planning,
developing, and managing digital collections with examples from
different implementations. Within this framework, the presentation will
cover selection, copyright, digitization, metadata creation, system and
interface building, and archiving stages. Workshop participants will be
offered practical strategies that represent current and emerging
standards, best practices, and sound decision making. Case studies from
Cornell University Library will be used to describe the various
approaches and strategies. Both success and failure stories will be used
to illustrate the importance of strategic planning.

*Critical Learning Questions*

* What is involved in planning digitization projects?
* What are the weakest points in the chain?
* How would one plan a new digitization program to his/her institution?

This presentation is designed for librarians, digitization operation
managers, and information professionals who are interested in sharpening
their skills in planning, managing, and assessing digitization projects.
Although technical background in digital library development will be
useful, the workshop will take a managerial approach and will not assume
any hands-on experience with technologies. However, familiarity with
