The Alexandria Library is looking for an enthusiastic individual to lead its
Youth Services team.  The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer
service skills and the desire to contribute to a busy, main library.  Under
the direction of the Central Library Manager, this position is responsible
for supervising the activities of the Youth Service Department, including
training and evaluating personnel, planning programs, collection development
and a variety of duties that require a thorough knowledge of youth services.


 

Duties:

 

.         Provides overall vision and leadership for Youth Services
throughout the Alexandria Library, to include planning and coordinating
initiatives and services on a system-wide basis.

.         Works as a member of the Central Library management team and
submits information and statistics to the Central Library Manager for
monthly and annual reports.

.         Hires, trains, and evaluates staff within the Youth Services
Department at the Central Library.

.         Plans and implements educational programs and literacy initiatives
including summer reading programs for children ages 0-12.

.         Coordinates collection development and maintenance for children's
materials.

.         Assists children, caregivers, parents, teachers, etc. with
requests for information and library materials.

.         Coordinates activities with Alexandria City Public Schools and the
Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.

.         Stays aware of professional trends and continually works to
improve youth services.

.         Represents the library through interaction with community
organizations and participation in professional associations on both a
regional and national level.

.         Assists with grant writing for Youth Services initiatives.

 

Skills and Abilities:

 

.         Comprehensive knowledge of children's and young adult literature,
programming and services.

.         Management and supervisory skills, including team building, time
management, and planning.

.         Excellent communication and customer service skills.

.         Knowledge of integrated library systems and technology.

.         Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing library environment.

.         Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with
staff.    

.         Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

 

 

Minimum requirements:

 

Minimum: Master's Degree in Library & Information Science from an
ALA-accredited school; experience at the level of Librarian II; or any
equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the
required knowledge, skills, and abilities; supervisory experience preferred.
Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire, a license to
practice as a registered professional librarian by the Commonwealth of
Virginia.

 

Salary:  $51,499.19 - $89,179.39. 

 

The City's promotional policy states that an employee who is promoted will
receive an 8.5% increase plus transition up to the closest step of the new
grade, whichever is higher. An employee's new promotional salary may not
exceed the maximum salary of the new pay grade. 

 

Schedule:

 

Hours are scheduled to meet the staffing needs of the library, and will
include days, evenings, two Saturdays per month, and occasional Sundays at
the Beatley Central Library
