A Note from the Chair of the DEI Strategies Committee
[https://neo-rls.org/photos/55272_10152019101307.jpg]Always a champion of diversity, NEO-RLS has made a commitment to education and leading in the crucial work of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). With the goal of creating a more welcoming, learning experience for all library workers in the region, NEO-RLS formed the DEI Strategies Committee.

The past few months, we have built this committee on the collective understanding of the importance of DEI in shaping a safe library community. Some of our internal and external goals include greater diversity in programming, reviewing policies and guidelines through a DEI lens, and creating services and resources for the membership. The committee has even created exit interviews for committee members and Trustees finishing their terms and has begun working on an orientation plan for new committee members.

With help from information gathered from the membership survey, the DEI Committee will spend the next few months writing our charge, creating an action plan, and implementing our goals.

Bias is one of the most controversial and important subjects in news literacy. People frequently perceive and allege bias in news coverage, but what does this really mean? What makes a piece of news biased, and who decides? What role do our own biases play in our perceptions of bias? Grant Opportunities
The State Library of Ohio recently announced<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=49813287&nr=5703602805> the launch of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Outreach Grant <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=49814509&nr=5703602805> initiative. Utilizing Federal ARPA funds received from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the State Library of Ohio encourages Ohio libraries of all types to apply for this competitive grant program revolving around the concept of Outreach.
The State Library is accepting applications for the second round of Metadata Mini-Grants <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=49805955&nr=5703602805> . This LSTA special grant enables libraries to digitize and create new collections for the  Digital Public Library of America <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=49815731&nr=5703602805> . Applications are due by Wednesday, July 14, 2021.

Training Opportunities
The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=49816953&nr=5703602805> core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 was recently renewed for another year (access through August 2021). Subsequent archived webinars are now available as separate modules in Niche Academy.  The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is now available for all Ohio public and academic library staff .  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.

Building Bridges:  Dialogue, Deliberation & Connection in Academic Libraries- October 27-29, 2021
The 2021 conference will take place online and consist of a selection of engaging workshops, live keynote sessions, pre-recorded presentations, and interactive poster sessions. As in years’ past, a pre-conference will kick off the event. All conference activities will occur October 27-29, 2021.

Register by August 27 on the conference website for early-bird pricing - only $25 for members and free for LIS students! Conference registration deadline is October 15.
