[OPLINTECH] Patron Wireless Management

Eric,

We have a Linksys WAP55AG & a WRT54G connected to a 10Mbps hub.
The hub connects to a virtual pc running ZoneCD (free version of PUBLICip)
It's output goes to the Red zone of IPCop (also running on a virtual pc)

We setup the ZoneCD to display a copy of the library policy.
You need to accept it to go on.

We have 9 laptops for in house loan.
The wireless access should be 24/7. Anyone can connect.

We have some logging / monitoring capability, mostly used for CIPA.
I check (week) daily for types of activity.

The setup seems to work quite well for us.
Generally the only mayor slowdown is when I copy certain files, certain
ways.

No real wireless compromise problems that we are aware of.
Our laptops have DeepFreeze and wireless doesn't see the internal network.

Subject: [OPLINTECH] Patron Wireless Management

Hi all,

I posted earlier asking about using Linux based routers to manage patron
wireless. I guess prior to the question of which hardware/software combo to
use, I should probably have asked what others are currently doing in terms
of management.

What are your philosophies (open vs. managed)? If open....
Have you had experience with any single user becoming a bandwidth hog?
Have you ever had anyone compromise another users PC or network traffic?

We currently use PUBLICip which is a great service, but as budgets tighten
we are looking for cheaper ways to deliver some of these services to patrons
at our 5 locations.

Thanks,

Eric Maynard
