[OPLINTECH] patron requests Gimp software on public PCs

Our patrons wouldn’t know what to do with a program like GiMP – they have enough problems creating email accounts. I’ve only had one patron (in two years) that would have benefited from GiMP but he made due with Windows 7 Paint. A lot of the tech savvy Patrons bring their own laptops in and use their own software. Our public computers are mainly used for Facebook and other social network sites but if the demand for a photo editor arises, I will probably lean towards Photoshop.

We have GIMP on several of our machines; to my knowledge its hardly used.

I have to disagree about paint.NET. It's a bit easier to use than GIMP. I don't have a PhotoShop background so GIMPs learning curve is VERTICAL. *not* intuitive, in my book.

But as far as having it available - it's free, VERY powerful, VERY flexible, and definitely worth the install. (I full endorse GIMP... just can't used the damned thing to great success, myself).) Upgrades/patches are not a big deal - install it and forget it, so management is easy.

Now... training patrons on how to use it, on the other hand...

Greetings:

We offer the Gimp and patrons seem to like it. Personally, for free graphics editors I find Paint.net to be very easy to use. You can download it from http://download.cnet.com/Paint-NET/3000-2192_4-10338146.html

I agree Chad. If we had patrons requesting it, I’d install it. I used to install it as a matter of course as well & like you, I haven’t much lately. We have MS Office on all of our patron pcs & it has a photo editor (Photo Manager in MS Office Tools) that is pretty brainless to use for average user. It is definitely not a Photoshop replacement but works (especially to convert & compress photos).

The Gimp is pretty patron-computer friendly. I used to install it on patron computers as a matter of course, but haven't so much lately. Mostly just because it caters to a pretty specific audience: people that want to do advanced graphics editing (retouching photos...things of that nature). For the very casual photo editing, some of the other programs out there might be a little easier to use for novice users. Gimp is very powerful, but has a steeper learning curve in my opinion.
