[OPLINTECH] Windows Update

Hi Nathan,

In my experience, the latest versions of Deep Freeze Enterprise have resolved that Windows Update issue. I’m using DFE to manage windows updates on Windows 7 Pro computers, and I haven’t encountered the Win Update-prompted reboot loop for months, and never since I deployed DFE v. 8.32.220.5109 (released May 2). The Faronics DFE release notes mention that Windows Updates boot loop issues were addressed in v. 8.30 (released Sept 2015), and so far, that’s been my experience.

I’m running DFE Management Console on an instance of Server 2008 R2, and the clients on Windows 7 Pro. AFAIK, the very latest DFE release, 8.33.220.5231, may introduce problems with Win 7 era OS; when I tried to deploy 8.33 on Server 2008 R2, I had to roll back to 8.32.

Kevin,

I've been having the same issue with our Windows 7 machines for awhile now. Sometime the Windows Update FixIt has worked but not always. I'm finding that it is downloading the updates and installing, it just doesn't seem to move on. I would have figured that Windows would have fixed their update utility by now. So I give the machines a limited amount of time (1 hour tops) and restart. They have always shown that they are updated.

I'm not having the issue on the machines that are updated via a Deep Freeze task. In that case updates are cached and pushed to the machine.

I was worried that having Deep Freeze handling updates would result in the computer thawing, installing updates, rebooting freezing, installing leftover updates, automatically rebooting, and getting stuck in that loop. Does Deep Freeze not do that?

I'm also having the Windows 7 Pro desktops take forever to update. At first it was an issue with our WSUS server, but after a restart, they're taking hours to search for updates (they're downloading through Microsoft, not from the server).
