FWIW

I bought an MSi gaming laptop 4/30/2016 with 128GB SSD for the OS and 1TB HD
for data.

Within a week it did a full upgrade to the next W10 version

Some stuff installed:
Quicken, Garmin stuff, Epson Scanner stuff, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, TightVNC,
Thunderbird,
LibreOffice, Outlook, KeePass, VeraCrypt, ESET, FreeFileSync, Skype,
GoogleEarthPro, Legacy8,
TaxAct, UltraEdit, VueScan, TapeCalc, all the windows Goodies, all the MSi goodies,
and probably some stuff I forgot

BYW I'm not gaming.

Right now it's 60GB used 65GB free as of today.
Data is on the 1TB drive.
It should be good for a few years.

You could always add a smaller HD for your data, if needed.
Or use network storage , which solves backup problems.
