Hi Chad,

We have two Memory Labs that can convert VHS tapes to digital formats.

Our main Memory Lab uses the Ion VCR 2 PC.
https://www.ionaudio.com/vcr-2-pc-vcr2pcx110
The hardware and included software are easy to use and we have received positive feedback from our patrons about it. Unfortunately, the unit is no longer made but you may be able to find used ones on Amazon and Ebay.

Our Mini Memory Lab uses UCEC All-In-One Video Converter analog to digital video transfer hardware/software.
https://www.amazon.com/UCEC-Capture-Device-Converter-Windows/dp/B07PS2TD9L
We have paired this with a VCR we had in stock and like the ION it works well. Patrons find the software easy to use and if you already have a VCR in stock, it is a much more cost-effective solution.

Before our patrons use our Memory Labs they need to sign up for and attend a virtual Memory Lab orientation that shows them the basics of how the equipment in the lab works and how to use it. We also created written and video training materials that staff and patrons can reference if they have any questions.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions.

Thanks!

Subject: [OPLINLIST] VHS → digital conversion service for patron use

Cross-posted to OPLINLIST & OPLINTECH:

I work with a library that is interested in providing a DHS→digital conversion service for patrons. Generally, the goal would be to allow patrons to bring their personally-created VHS tapes and convert them to a digital format: maybe a playable DVD format, or perhaps save them as a file to an external storage device they either bring with them or maybe purchase from the library, or perhaps upload to their preferred cloud service. We know there are various DIY hardware+software solutions that can do this, each requiring various levels of technical expertise to use well. But for any libraries that have a solution that the patrons seem to be able to use easily and successfully (preferably with minimal staff assistance), we're curious to learn what specific hardware/software you're using. Any technical/policy/general tips you've learned from your experience and that you might share would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Chad

My personal listserv policy:
I may not respond off-list to topical replies sent only/directly to me.
Libraries have a wonderfully amazing reputation for openness and sharing, a concept I support and encourage. Your thoughts are useful and valuable. I beg you to share them publicly so that other libraries can benefit from them too and perhaps participate in an open conversation...which can't occur off-list.
