Lloyd Library and Museum Announces Autumn 2007 Events and Exhibitions

The Lloyd Library and Museum proudly announces an autumn filled with
programming, events, and exhibitions that will appeal to diverse and
eclectic palates. Festivities begin Saturday, October 6, at 4 p.m.
through 8 p.m. with a catered reception featuring harvest-inspired
delicacies <C:\DOCUME~1\anna\LOCALS~1\Temp\\attabc9d.jpg> . At 5 p.m.,
the Lloyd welcomes former director Mike Flannery for a lecture on
Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654), who Flannery describes as "the morning
star of alternative medicine" in his newly edited work The English
Physician by Culpeper. Copies of the book will be available for
purchase (cash or check ONLY please) and signing by Flannery throughout
the evening.

In conjunction with Flannery's lecture on Culpeper and his early
contributions to alternative or popular medicine, Lloyd's new book
exhibition will focus on this topic. The Rise of Popular Medicine: From
Nicholas Culpeper to Early 20th Century America will feature books from
the library's collection by Culpeper as well as the works of those who
were inspired by his philosophical belief that medical knowledge be
available and easily accessible to the general public. Called by some
"the Father of Alternative Medicine," Culpeper's influence extended
across five centuries eventually informing leaders of 19th and 20th
century American botanical sectarians, such as Samuel Thomson, Wooster
Beach, and John Uri Lloyd. This exhibition will be on display from
October 6 through December 31, 2007.

The Lloyd Gallery will feature works by artist and photographer Nancy
Howell-Koehler, who will be on hand October 6, for the official opening
of her botanical art exhibit of sepia-toned digital art prints (see
example at left). Howell-Koehler has created, exhibited, and written
about photography and art since 1970, living and working in both
Cincinnati and Yellow Springs. She says about her current work,
"Flowers are sensual. As earth bound plants they relate through
movement and color as they follow the sun. It is this liveliness and
radiant energy, I hope to capture in my series of digital prints." The
exhibition at the Lloyd will run from October 1 through December 31,
2007. Cards of Howell-Koehler's beautiful prints will be available for
purchase; and, there will also be an opportunity to win one of the
prints on exhibit. For more information about these events and the

The Lloyd Library and Museum, located at 917 Plum Street, downtown
Cincinnati, is a local and regional treasure. The library was developed
in the nineteenth century by the Lloyd brothers-John Uri, Curtis Gates,
and Nelson Ashley to provide reference sources for Lloyd Brothers
Pharmacists, Inc., one of the leading pharmaceutical companies of the
period. Today the library is recognized worldwide by the scientific
community as a vital research center. The library holds, acquires, and
provides access to both historic and current materials on the subjects
of pharmacy, botany, horticulture, herbal and alternative medicine,
pharmacognosy, and related topics. Although our collections have a
scientific focus, they also have relevance to humanities topics, such as
visual arts and foreign languages through resources that feature
botanical and natural history illustrations, original artworks, and
travel literature, thereby revealing the convergence of science and art.
The Lloyd is open to anyone with an interest in these topics. Free
parking is available for patrons and visitors behind the library
building. For more information, visit the Lloyd website at
