[SOA] Paid Digital Communications Internship—Ohio Local History Alliance (Columbus)

The Ohio Local History Alliance (OLHA) is seeking a motivated individual to provide onsite digital communications services at the Ohio History Center in Columbus, Ohio. Under supervision, this individual will fulfill a paid internship with a requirement of a minimum of 300 hours to be completed no later than August 31, 2013. Projects will include the development and implementation of new standards for digital communication for the Alliance, including web publishing and social media. As such, this intern will be required to research and execute improvements to current communications including a newly constructed website launched in 2012, built on a custom word press platform, with limited content in place.  A major priority of this internship is to build content and grow this website,  develop short-term and long-range plans for continued improvements and maintenance of digital communications. Applicants should be creative and task-oriented and be able to demonstrate strong writing skills. Proficiency using Facebook, LinkedIn, Wordpress, YouTube and Webinars are required.  Experience with graphic design/layout and website design preferred.  This internship is co-sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council.

Specific details:

1.       Work under the direction of the Local History Office (LHO) staff of the Ohio Historical Society to manage and improve the social media tools of OLHA.  Current tools include the website, Facebook, LinkedIn and a new YouTube channel, but expectations are that these tools will grow.  Although OLHA and LHO are separate organizations, they are joined in a common purpose and by the belief that through collaboration the two groups can be effective in meeting their goals. The staff of the OHS Local History Office administers and coordinates all Alliance programs. The Alliance, through its twenty-three person board of trustees, provides direction and oversight for those programs. The Alliance's board also serves as the nucleus of a network of organizations and individuals interested in all aspects of community history in Ohio.

2.       Work in partnership with the OLHA’s 21st Century Committee, helping to guide and implement the overall initiative to improve the social media tools of OLHA.

3.       Make regular weekly reports to an immediate supervisor and bi-monthly reports to the OHLA board on the progress of social media improvements.

4.       Implement specific changes as assigned to web tools.  Some of these include:

·         Creation of an OLHA Board member page with complete contact information, photographs, site information and site photographs.

·         Work with OHS IT to create regional email addresses and contact forms for board members.

·         Create distribution lists for members in each region.

·         Create pages for all OLHA events, including annual and regional meetings, brass tacks workshops, etc.

·         Create pages and regularly add information for all 4 OHLA Committees: Governance, 21st Century Communication, Advocacy, and Education.

·         Write or solicit original blog posts for the blog portion of the website, resulting in permanent, searchable content for the body of the webpage with a historical emphasis or a social media emphasis that is beneficial to the historical filed.

·         Make sure all pages are completely filled with appropriate information, with special emphasis on pages identified as adding great member value such as the “Grants” page.

5.       Actively explore and suggest new creative ways to make our sites dynamic, and implement as approved by OLHA Board.

6.       Process, collect, compare and report on Google analytics to identify where visitor interest lies, and make adjustments to socials media tools as dictated by data.  Present this information at OLHA board meetings together with recommendations on proposed changes for approval.

7.       Create a both a hard copy Procedures Manual and a digital version that can be uploaded to Basecamp for easy access for board members providing appropriate guidance for all social media tool maintenance to insure sustainability of tools once internship is complete.  Procedures Manual should include website maintenance, content schedule and calendar flagging when certain materials should be updated.

8.       Upon completion of internship, prepare a “Next Steps Report.”
Formed in 1960s, OLHA is an association of historical societies and museums that works closely with the Ohio Historical Society (OHS) to fulfill a common goal to encourage the preservation and the presentation of Ohio's heritage.

Qualifications:
An ideal candidate would be a tech savvy history major.  A history major is preferred, but social media, technology, marketing or business majors with an interest in history will also be considered.  An interest in creating original content and author articles is also desired.  Candidates should be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programs and have previous technology experience.
Compensation:
This is a paid internship with a $2,000 stipend, which will be paid in four payments.  Upon completion, the Local History Office and OLHA representatives will provide the intern with written letters of recommendation and will be available as references.
