Job Posting: Special Collections Processing Program Student Assistant
The Special Collections Description & Access Department at Ohio State University Libraries is currently hiring student assistants to support the work of the Special Collections processing program. Anticipated start date is mid or late May; preference will be given to applicants who are available to work for the duration of the summer (or longer). The position will primarily focus on archival arrangement and description tasks.
Starting pay: $10.00-$11.00 per hour (depending on prior experience)
Schedule: Flexible between Monday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., up to 30 hours per week. Applicants must be able to work in person at Ohio State University in Columbus for all shifts; no remote work is available.
Required Qualifications:
Must be currently enrolled in a relevant degree-seeking graduate program, or registered to begin one in the fall 2015 semester. [You do not need to be a previous or current OSU student to apply.]
Must have completed at least one undergraduate or graduate-level course that includes content on archival arrangement and description practices
Ability to work a minimum of 15 hours per week throughout summer 2015 (roughly mid-May through mid-August)
Ability to follow and apply established archival guidelines
Ability to work under general supervision and direction after on-the-job training
Neat, legible handwriting
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in an environment performing organizational tasks with documents or records, preferably an archives or special collections environment
Completion of one or more graduate-level courses focused on archival arrangement and description practices
Previous experience entering information into a content management system or database
Interest in pursuing archival processing or other archival technical services work professionally
Position Description:
Processing Program student assistants perform archival collection arrangement and description tasks following archival guidelines, including: application of complex intellectual arrangement plans to archival materials, creation of collection metadata, assistance with archival preservation tasks, and input/maintenance of metadata into an archival content management system. May assist with other projects and tasks related to archival technical services work, as available.
