Dear Oplinlist Coordinator:

We have a local person that does living history programs for public
libraries and schools. His name is Doug Bahnsen and he asked if I would
submit his program information to you in hopes that it could be placed on
the oplinlist E-Mail.

Richard Baranowski

Below is the program information:

LIVING HISTORY THROUGH STORY, HUMOR AND SONG

Doug Bahnsen, actor, historian and environmentalist, has combined his
talents and interests to create five interactive programs that entertain as
well as inform.

OHIO HISTORY: "Wolf Stands on Two Feet"

A white man raised by the Indians in the Ohio Territory during the late
1700's, Mr. Wolf will speak about Ohio History from the arrival of the
white man in the early 1800's to the Civil War. Mr. Wolf will recount his
experiences in Ohio during the Indian Wars and the War of 1812 as well as
explain how the Indians lost their lands. Other topics that Mr. Wolf will
speak about are life in Ohio under the white man's rule, statehood, and
early schools.

JOHNNY APPLESEED

This program is about a famous and colorful character who lived during the
late 1700's to the mid 1800's; John Chapman, more commonly known as Johnny
Appleseed. Johnny Appleseed was an important naturalist who was responsible
for many of the original apple orchards that were planted throughout Ohio
and Indiana. Johnny Appleseed appears in his feed sack clothing and iron pot
hat to tell of the people and animals that he met during his travels and how
he learned to live in harmony with nature.

CANAL BOAT CAPTAIN

This program presents the 1880's way of life on the adventurous, romantic
and sometimes dangerous canal system of Ohio. Mr. Bahnsen portrays Captain
Bahnsen, an 1880's canal boat captain on the Miami and Erie Canal. Captain
Bahnsen presents slides, tells stories of daily canal boat life, and plays
his banjo performing songs that were popular during this exciting and
important time in Ohio.

JOHN MUIR

"A Conversation with John Muir (1838-1914), The Father of Conservation."
Join Mr. Bahnsen as he portrays John Muir, and listen as he discusses his
efforts to save the Hetch Hetchy Valley near Yosemite National Park from a
government- damming project. Listen as he talks of his battles to protect
Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and the Petrified Forest from loggers, miners
and ranchers. Enjoy this living history program depicting John Muir,
complete with a beautiful slide presentation from the John Muir National
Historical Site, and Yosemite National Park.

HENRY DAVID THOREAU

Visit with Henry David Thoreau, America's Naturalist and Philosopher
(1817-1862). Join Mr. Thoreau as he talks of his life and recalls his two
years at his cabin on Walden Pond. Take part in conversation with him and
learn how his opinions of society, mankind, and nature are more relevant
today than they were during his lifetime. Discover how this 19th century
writer has influenced great leaders of the 20th century with his philosophy
that the simple life is the most rewarding life.
