As a longtime user of myspace.com, I don't believe that live chatting is one of its primary functions -- if that feature exists at all. Although I agree that parents should be educated and communicative with their children, the fact is, online networking is quickly becoming an extremely viable tool for marketing and promotional purposes for up-and-coming musicians, writers, and other artists.
 
Please visit [myspace.com/ioproject] for an example of a local musician using this site for its intended purpose.

At this time we block all chat sites and have for over 2 years.  Martha

Dear Colleagues:

 

We have had a parent request to block myspace.com.  We haven't seen any reason to block it and feel that parents need to communicate with their children about internet safety.  We are taking steps to do a better job of educating parents about sites such as this and the possible disclosure of personal information by minors.

 

However, we have heard that other libraries ARE blocking myspace and similar websites.

 

Please let me know if you are blocking it and the reasons you made the decision.
