[OPLINLIST] book stumper

Hi Listers, 

 

A patron is looking for a book (or short story) he read in high school
possibly called The Sacrifice.  It is about a town where they lock kids up
in the basement every year, and when the kids come out they're never quite
the same.  He thought the author could be Ursula LeGuin.    This was
required reading for him in high school which was probably early 1980s.  Any
ideas what this could be?  I came up with nothing.
