[OPLINLIST] News regarding Mango and NewsBank subscriptions

As previously announced (see below), the statewide subscriptions to NewsBank and Mango Languages are set to expire on June 30 and will not be renewed. Because this could create a financial hardship for public libraries that budget for a calendar year and may not have funds currently available to replace these two resources locally, the OPLIN Board on Friday approved the use of some E-rate funds to extend both these contracts for a few months, contingent on contract approval by the state Controlling Board.

Mango Languages will be available to public libraries (not schools or colleges) for another six months, until the end of December 2013, to give libraries a chance to arrange a replacement and budget for that expense. Mango strongly values the relationship it has formed with OPLIN and would like to work with each library individually to ensure that Mango can continue to be a valued part of their collection. By renewing with Mango by August 1st, libraries can lock in a 2013 rate for the 2014 calendar year. Plus, libraries will get access to Mango’s newest product that teaches by using full-length feature films, Mango Premiere, when it debuts later this year. NewsBank will be available to public libraries (not schools or colleges) for another four months, until the end of October 2013. NewsBank is prepared to take orders at any time, between now and the end of October for ongoing subscriptions that can be paid in the new fiscal year in January, so libraries do not need to lose any access to the content, even if needing to fund the new subscription from the 2014 fiscal year. If for some unforeseen reason the state Controlling Board does not approve these contracts, the subscriptions will end at the end of July 2013 (we can extend for one month without Controlling Board approval); however, we have no reason to expect that these contracts will not be approved.
