Down in the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Children’s Museum, kids can can test boats on a giant water table. They can play musical instruments from far-away places in Kids’ Town and use contraptions to fling plastic balls across the room in the Energy Zone. I look around and see STEM learning, but the kids have no problem seeing it as play.

We’ve gotten used to seeing museums as interactive experiences. You can walk through with your hands clasped behind you if you’d like, but you miss out if you don’t push the buttons, listen to the recordings, and explore the exhibits. Walk onto the steamboat in the Cincinnati History Museum and you can see how the engine turns the water wheel.

Libraries are becoming interactive in new ways, too. As we explore new areas of STEM programming, look around you for local institutions that find inventive ways to teach. Maybe that’s a museum, or maybe it’s a club that builds rockets, writes code or brews beer. It may be that the Next Big Thing in your library is found in your zip code instead of on the pages of a magazine.

SWON is excited to have Dawn Kirchner (Director of Education) and Kendra Schide (Coordinator for “Exhibits To Go”) from Dayton’s Boonshoft Museum of Discovery speaking at our upcoming STEM Summer Reading Program workshop , March 4th. They’ll talk about the Boonshoft’s “Exhibits To Go” programs, which are available to libraries, and then present their traveling exhibit on nanoscience!

Whether you’re looking for ideas for Summer Reading or to add more STEM programming in general, we’re glad to follow last fall’s STEM SRP program with a new slate of STEM presentations. Register now: http://tiny.cc/srp-stem

SWON’s Staff Training Symposium: Weathering Personality Challenges

Registration is now open for SWON’s spring Staff Training Symposium, scheduled for March 25th at the National Composite Center in Kettering, Ohio . With Early Bird Pricing available until the end of February, the time to sign up is now: http://bit.ly/swon-sts .

During the keynote, you’ll learn to manage conflict by improving your understanding of personality types. By learning more about your own personality, you’ll be better equipped to respond to challenging situations around you, whether they involve customers or co-workers.

Next, take your pick from five different breakout sessions. Learn more about personality, stress and wellness, or brush up on copyright, email management or tech services in collection management. With meals and even massages, we’ve planned an enjoyable and rewarding day of learning. Join us!
