[OPLINLIST] accelerated reader labeling

At our branch which also functions as the elementary school library we do not label for AR, but we have a terminal with a barcode scanner that is just for looking up AR points on the AR website. The kids/parents/teachers have been taught to do it for themselves. Other than there sometimes being a line of kids waiting it works well.

Good Afternoon,

Are there any libraries that label their accelerated reader books?

If so what kind of labels do you use? Where do you place the labels, on the inside cover, spine?

Thank you for your help.

I am interested in responses to this as well. I am always looking for ways to make AR searching easier for parents and librarians alike. Shelving AR books has been tricky. Parents expect a separate AR section in the library, or for all AR books to be completely and clearly labeled like they see in their school libraries. Problem is, up until very recently, different schools in our area had different AR book lists. As the public library, we serve students from multiple areas. You can see how this could be a problem. I still haven't come up with a great solution. Please share!

Hi,

I got started marking AR books quite a few years ago when our school next to us was using the program. A few years ago, the school stopped using the program, but I have continued to mark the books as AR.

I have found it helps parents, students, and teachers. Our primary school of K-3 graders comes to our library weekly. Each class has a day and time to visit. While here, they can find books on their level. Now, I know there is a lot of controversy on labeling book levels. For our library and our patrons; teachers included, they like it. Most teachers will have their students get at least one book on their reading level.

We use stickers from Demco that say Accelerated Reader.

In the back of the book in pencil, I put BL (book level) and PV (point value) ex. BL 3.5 PV 2. That way it is always in the same location and patrons can find it easily.

The AR label goes on the spine of the book. We try to use a sharpie to put the AR book level on the label too and then tape over the label as the book is being processed.

Students, parents, and teachers can recognize the AR label on the spine and check the book level.

We do not put the AR books in their own area. The books are shelved according to their call number.

To determine if a book is on the AR list, I use the AR website - http://www.arbookfind.com. As I get new books in and as I am marking the call number in the book to be processed, I also check to see if the book is on the AR website. I scan the book's ISBN and then it will come up; unless the book is too new and has not made it on the AR list. So... later on (a month or two later), we go through our new juvenile books and check them again. It is kind of a pain, but we feel like it is one of those services we try to provide to our patrons especially since we are so connected with having the school classes visit our library.

My understanding is each school buys the AR tests. If you have students from different school district use your library, you can't go by just one school's list of books, plus schools sometimes buys more AR tests and so there would be new books on their lists. There are thousands of books that are on the AR website.

The hardest part was the initial checking of each book once we decided to start marking the books. We checked every book on our shelf to see if it was on the AR website. That took some time to get done. Now, it is just checking the newer books and that is manageable.

If none of this makes sense, please feel free to contact me with more questions.

Good Luck with your decision regarding labeling of the AR books.
