Historical Information about the London Public Library.

On January 27, 1902, Sallie Dooris, a member of the Woman's Club, was
petitioned by her fellow members to write a letter to philanthropist, Andrew
Carnegie, to request assistance in building a public library in London.

A public announcement was made on February 10, 1902, that Mr. Carnegie
agreed to donate $10,000 for the establishment of a new public library
building.

The Library was built on the corner of E. First and S. Union Streets in the
downtown area.

The Library was formally opened on January 18, 1905. Four hundred local
spectators were present at the opening ceremony and over 416 books were
donated by community members to help fill the new building.
