Please excuse multiple postings...
In September the State Library of Ohio purchased statewide access to The Librarian's Guide to Homelessness<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/training-and-professional-development/> through Niche Academy. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is now available for all Ohio public library staff. The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe. A former director of a Chicago homeless shelter, Ryan Dowd is the author of The Librarians Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone. He travels all over the United States speaking to libraries about how to best help homeless patrons using empathy and respect. To access the training, go to the State Library of Ohio's Training and Professional Development page<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/training-and-professional-development/> and click the homelessness training link. Once in Niche Academy, you will be prompted to create an account.
Due to the measures taken stop the spread of COVID Ryan Dowd is providing access to archived webinars available on Niche Academy.
When in the core training, scroll down to the end and you'll see the following:
* Managing frontline staff who work with homeless individuals
* Burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue
* Advanced body language skills
* Domestic violence and sexual assault (in libraries) featuring Miranda Dube
* Homelessness 201: Advanced understanding of individuals experiencing homelessness
* Body odor: the most dreaded conversation.
Combined with the core training, this brings the courses up to almost 10 hours.
These were recorded live online, so the video quality is not quite as good as the core training. The plan is to go back and re-record them as higher quality videos, but with the current crisis we wanted to get them out quickly.
The next live webinar
Ryan is planning on still doing the live Q&A webinar on April 2. (He will do it from the shelter).
This webinar will be all questions from you:
* You can submit questions in advance here: http://www.homelesslibrary.com/qandawebinarsurvey.html<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.homelesslibrary.com%2Fqandawebinarsurvey.html&data=02%7C01%7Cekelsey%40library.ohio.gov%7C8976d4a2334e4cec9ffa08d7c522bd9b%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0%7C0%7C637194625324089724&sdata=b%2BI1rDztelH%2BGWIc0jJ6gObcRyFcB1uigEeHuWNpzS4%3D&reserved=0>
* I will be taking live questions also
The types of questions you can ask:
* Is there a specific patron that you are unsure how to handle and would like guidance?
* Did you have a situation with a homeless patron and you're not sure whether or not you dealt with it correctly?
* Do you have specific questions about people experiencing homelessness, poverty, mental illness, or substance abuse?
* Have you heard something about people experiencing homelessness and you're not sure whether or not it's true?
* Do you have a coworker who struggles when dealing with challenging patrons and want to know how to help him/her?
