Two Floyd’s Pick Honor Books have also been selected.

Luminous: Living Things That Light Up the Night<https://greystonebooks.com/products/luminous> by Julia Kuo (Greystone Kids, 2022, ISBN 9781771648882) has been named the ninth annual Floyd’s Pick Book Award<https://library.ohio.gov/libraries/library-programs-and-development/ctro/floyds-pick-book-award> winner, awarded by the Choose to Read Ohio (CTRO) Advisory Council in memory of children’s literature expert, advocate, and librarian Floyd Dickman.

The Floyd’s Pick Book Award is given annually to a book written by an Ohio author or illustrated by an Ohio illustrator that is representative of high-quality literature created for children. It aims to carry on the legacy of Floyd Dickman’s joyful work to support and share children’s literature.

The CTRO Advisory Council has also selected two Floyd’s Pick Honor Books for 2024:

A Boy and His Mirror<https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/625036/a-boy-and-his-mirror-by-marchant-davis-illustrated-by-keturah-a-bobo/> by Marchánt Davis, illustrated by Keturah A. Bobo (Nancy Paulsen Books, 2023, ISBN 9780593110553)

In the Dark<https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/667596/in-the-dark-by-kate-hoefler-illustrated-by-corinna-luyken/> by Kate Hoefler, illustrated by Corinna Luyken (Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2023, ISBN 9780593372838)

Floyd’s Pick Book Award winner Luminous: Living Things That Light Up the Night is an absorbing and visually stunning picture book that introduces readers to the phenomenon of bioluminescence through the adventures of a mother and child discovering foxfire on the forest floor, exploring a cave full of glowworms, and diving into the ocean depths. The CTRO Advisory Council characterized Luminous as “lovely narrative nonfiction that engages and entices readers to wonder while they learn,” praised the captivating and informative illustrations, and appreciated that scientific explanations are integrated into the page spreads of the story, rather than being relegated to back matter.

Julia Kuo is the author and illustrator of Let’s Do Everything and Nothing and the illustrator of I Am an American: The Wong Kim Ark Story, I Dream of Popo, and The Sound of Silence. She also creates editorial illustrations and is an outdoor adventurer and rock climber. Julia Kuo lived in Cleveland from 2007-2012 and 2018-2020 and now lives in Bellevue, Washington.

Floyd’s Pick Honor Book A Boy and His Mirror shares a child-centered story of empowerment. Chris is teased at school for his hair, but his mother’s affirmation and a magical encounter with his mirror inspire Chris to address the teasing and replace it with acceptance and kindness. Illustrator Keturah A. Bobo grew up in Toledo and lives in Columbus.

Honor Book In the Dark expresses a hopeful vision of how people can overcome bias and see one another in new light. Its unusual trim size and binding invite the reader to turn pages from down to up instead of right to left, and to observe two perspectives on one story of an assumption-busting encounter between communities. Author Kate Hoefler lives in eastern Ohio. She is the first three-time Floyd’s Pick Honor author; her books Courage Hats and Rabbit and the Motorbike are previous Floyd’s Pick Honor Books.

Floyd Dickman was a Library Consultant at the State Library of Ohio and a tireless advocate for children’s literature and librarianship. He had an enduring impact on library and literacy services in Ohio and across the country. During his career, Floyd was awarded the Ohio Library Council Librarian of the Year award and was named Outstanding Friend by the Ohio Family Literacy Task Force. Upon Floyd’s retirement in 1999, the State Library of Ohio Board’s retirement resolution recognized his leadership, commitment, and passion for library services, children’s literature, and family literacy. Floyd is also remembered as a dedicated mentor to librarians and library science students. He remained an active teacher, advisor, and champion for many years after retirement. Floyd Dickman passed away in June 2015.

The CTRO Advisory Council established Floyd’s Pick in December 2015 with a proclamation by Beverly Cain, then State Librarian of Ohio. Ohio author and illustrator Loren Long, winner of the first Floyd’s Pick Book Award for Little Tree, graciously provided the Floyd’s Pick Book Award artwork.
